POORVA KARMA

SNEHANA
It’s also knownasOleation Therapy.It is atreatments that are done prior tobeginning the Panchakarma therapy.As stated inCharaka Samhita there are mainlyfour kinds of snehana dravyathat are considered to be the most effective for snehan.
1) Ghee (ghrita)
2) Oil (taila)
3) Fat (vasa)
4.) BoneMarrow(majja)
Dadimadighrita, tilataila the bala tailaGhrita and others are amongthemedicines usedinthe snehana.
Thetechnique lubricates all over thebodyusing medicated oil/gheeinternally and externally.When the medicated oil/ghee has beenapplied internally, it is known assnehapanam, it is veryimportant procedure for Panchakarma.
CLASSIFICATION OF SNEHANA-
1) Internal oleation
Itinvolves the consumption ofsnehana dravya , whether in a medicinalornon-medicated way. Itmay or may notbemixedwith other ayurvedicmedicines or food items.This method helps to lubricate thetissuesas well as various areas of thehuman body.
2) External oleation/massage/abhyanga
Italso includes head massage and body massage, as well asgargles, etc. that are medicated with oil.
SWEDANA
It’s also known assteam therapyortherapeutic sudation, isthe second procedure performed beforePanchakarma.The treatment improvesblood circulation and eliminates thecontaminants through the pores of the skinfrom the body.

PRADHAN KARMA OR SHODHAN CHIKITSA
1) VAMANA
It is amethod of controlling therapeuticvomiting. Vamana therapycan be found inkapha doshas.If the dosha reachessome limit and ismoved to other place and needs tobeexpelledout of thebody. Kapharesidesin the chestarea, soelimination viaan oral pathwayiseasy.
HERBA USED AS VAMAK DRAVYA
Madana phala Panchakarma Treatment in Nashik is thebestvamak dravya. Other herbsthat are used includeKutaja, nimba,yashtimadhu vacha etc.
Twotypes-
1.)Gastric emesis – itstimulates the gastric mucosa andthen vomiting center inthe brain.
2.)Central emesis- itstimulates the medullabrain and causes vomiting to occurin the brain.
The coordination of vomiting is controlled by thean oblongata medulla in the brainandis triggered bysalivation and nausea.

INDICATIONS-
Thetreatment is appropriate fordiarrhea, dysentery, feverof recent origin such as cold, coughasthma, tumour,urinary tractdisorder anorexia, skin disorders and respiratory disorders, as well as indigestionfibroid, goiter, filariasisand many more.
CONTRAINDICATIONS-
Patientswith a kapha dosha less thannormalshouldn’t undergovammanatherapy.Pregnant women, withoutsnehana karma, agni that is strong(digestive system), person who isunder stress, or hungry, children, old person or weak, with an enlargedcolon, intestinal parasitesthe prostate is enlarged, etc.in these cases, vamana karmashould be avoided.
2) VIRECHAN
Virechan (purgation)is the second form of karmaofpanchakarma. It isone of the most commonlyutilized treatments, especially inillnesses caused bypitta dosha that is aggravated. The pittadoesha is removedforcibly through the anal route.The doshas get eliminated withless effort and less hassleas compared to vamana karma. Itmay also be administeredinpitta-kapha or vata-pittadoshas, where pitta is predominant. Thetherapy requires the following of aeating regimens to attain thenormaldiet , and then completethetreatment.
HERBS USED AS VIRECHAK DRAVYA
Virechan drugs include milk, takra, gavakshi, vacha, punarnava, shala, panchmoola, saptala, haritaki, kashmarya, draksha, jyotishmati, vibhitaki, amalaki, abhaya etc.
Depending upon the medicine administeredVirechan can be classified into two typesThere are two types of virechan –
1.) Snigdha virechan- meaning ofsnigdha isoily. It ismentioned in the context of pitta.isconnected tovata dosha.
2.) Rooksha virechan- itcan be identified when pitta has beenassociated with kapha dosha.
INDICATIONS
Virechancan be givenconstipation, gout, piles, jaundice, liver disease and splenomegaly. Ascites,dysuria, pain in largecolon, urogenitalsystem infemales and males nasal bleeding, etc.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Insufficiency of the digestive system, diarrhea, dysentery, ulcerin the rectum, an emaciatedpersonafter excessiveoleation treatment, wounds etcarethe cases wherevirechanis not recommended.
3) BASTI KARMA
Inearlier times,thebladder (basti) wasutilized as anequipmentforelimination.The name for thisprocedure is basti Karma.
Basti isa particular treatmentforayurvedic panchakarma.It is a treatment that uses medicated gheeoil, decoction etcare administeredthrough rectal,urinary and vaginal route. Itenhances immunity and promotesoverall health for an individual. Vatadosha causesmany diseasesand basti karmais the remedythat is most effective in calmingvata dosha.Therefore, it is describedas ‘ardhaChikitsa’ .

Theadministration of medicines withthe basti, or even vasti(urinary bladder) isknown as basti karma.
One or more of theherbs, decoctions of herbal origin, medicated oil,and other such things, ksheera, mamsarasa, raktaand othermedicines in the form ofliquid are used depending uponthehealth condition of theindividual.

Jeevaka, rishabhaka, jeevanti, guduchi, gokshura, bala, draksha, shatavari, shatpushpa, yashtimadhu, amalaki, brihati, dadima,pippali, vidanga, adraka, musta, nimbi, kutaja etc are used for basti karma.
